Enduring Family Culture: City Driver Talks About His 30 Years At Averitt

Doug Denham has been a part of our team for 30 years, and he’s seen lots of changes during that time. One thing has remained the same – our family-oriented culture – and Doug says that’s one of the reasons we’ve experienced continued growth for 50 years.

Doug started at our former Nashville facility before we moved to our current service center on Briley Parkway. And when he transferred to Lexington KY in 2000 to be closer to family, he was able to move into our new facility there.

“The growth of Averitt has been very important to me,” Doug says. “Averitt always seems to be doing things to try to improve and take care of the customer, as well as take care of associates.”

Doug says our culture is evident in the relationships he’s maintained through the years.

“I still have friends in Nashville who I talk to today,” he says. “I worked with them for 10 years, and they’re like family to me. Even as we’ve gotten bigger and stronger, Averitt has kept the family aspect intact – it’s the same as it was when I started in 1990.”

Another key to our success, according to Doug, is our commitment to providing numerous career opportunities. He’s seen that firsthand, starting on the dock, getting his CDL, and working in shuttle and city driving roles.

“It’s great to me that you can do those things,” Doug says. “And if you want to get into leadership, you’ve got that opportunity. Within the company, there are so many career paths that you can take. If you want to move to a different area, you can call the Job Hotline and see what’s on there.”

Throughout his career, Doug has been able to see the way other companies operate, and to him, there’s no comparison.

“To me, Averitt is by far the best in the industry,” he says.

Doug says the key to our continued success is the same thing that brought us to this point – our focus on people.

“There are many companies that grow and grow, and then it’s not the same type of place to work,” he explains. “Averitt treats you like family, and it’s flexible. Averitt is willing to work with you, and our atmosphere is important to me.”

Thank you, Doug, for your efforts that have helped us remain a leader in the industry for 50 years. That commitment, as well as the dedication of our entire team, will help us stay strong for the next 50 years and beyond!
